Aquilegia, Columbine. Varieties range from 6 inches to 3 feet. Many colors, bloom spring to early summer.

Begonia grandis. Hardy Begonia. Several varieties. Easy to grow

Campanula, Bellflower. Many varieties from 4 inches to 3 ft. Peach bells, 2-3 ft. Blue, white, pink flowers, summer

Corydalis lutea. 10 to 15 inches. Yellow flowers all summer. Blue flowered variety is a little shorter.

Cyclamen, hardy types. 4-6 inches. Pink to Crimson flowers, spring

Dicentra, Bleeding Heart. Common, 2-3 ft, pink or white in spring. Fringed bleeding heart 12-18 inches, pink to crimson, blooms May to August.

Digitalis, Foxglove. 2-4 ft spike flowers in pink shades in summer.

Epimedium. 12-15 inches, grown mostly for its interesting foliage. White, yellow, pink flowers are semi-hidden in spring.

Ferns, many kinds and sizes from 6 inches to 2 feet. Grown for foliage, no flowers.

Galium odoratum. Sweet Woodruff. Tough, shade tolerant ground cover with small, fragrant white flowers.

Hakenochloa macra. Hakone grass. Low shade tolerant grass. Yellow striped leaves

Hellaborus. Christmas Rose, Lenten Rose. Helebores are late winter and early spring bloomers

Hemerocallis. Day Lily. Tolerant of light to medium shade. Many colors

Heucherella. Cross between Heuchera and Tiarella. Showy leaves.

Heuchera hybrids. Cousin of Coral Bells. Many new leaf colors and patterns. Leaves are more attractive than flowers

Hosta, Plantain Lily. Grown mostly for the large, colorful leaves, many variegated. Miniatures, 6 inches to 3 ft. White to lavender flower spikes in summer. A collection of these would be attractive with nothing else. Can be purchased in 3 to 5 gallon sizes for immediate affect.

Lamium, Spotted Nettle. 3-5 inches. Silver and green variegated foliage, with white, pink, or crimson flowers. Spreading ground cover. My favorite variety is ‘Pink Pewter’.

Oxalis, Shamrock. Oxalis crassipes grows 6 to 10 inches with pink flowers intermittently all summer.

Primula vulgaris. English Primrose. Early spring bloom.

Pulmonaria, Lungwort. 6 to 12 inches. Spotted leaves. Blue to Pink flowers in early spring.

Tiarella. Foam flower. Fluffy spike flowers in early spring. Very shade tolerant.

Tradescantia, Spiderwort. 18 in to 3 ft. Curling, grass-like leaves, blue or pink flowers most of the summer.
